As the membership voted by more than 9 to 1 in favour of industrial action, a one-day strike has been by called by the NUT for Tuesday 5th July. This raises the prospect of widespread school closures, with implications for childcare for parents across the country.
The NUT demands an increase in funding to schools and education as a whole, and guaranteed terms and conditions in all types of schools. They are also calling for the government to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.
The action follows government proposals to turn all schools into academies, which could mean changes to teachers’ work and pay conditions as decided by a board of governors.
